ON BOARD WITH CHANEL AIRLINES: BACKSTAGE AT CHANEL SS16 SHOW

Who ever thought airports could be so fashionable? Nothing’s impossible for Karl Lagerfeld. This season, the Kaiser transformed Paris’s Grand Palais into an airport’s terminal, with check-in hostesses, waiting benches, luggage trolleys and, of course, an arrivals/departures digital board. The art of travelling in style may certainly come back as a trend after this. Edie Campbell opened the show in a pink and green tattersall check overalls, carrying her Chanel-branded luggage. Bold makeup was on the agenda: the girls were sporting metallic blue painted masks with white eyeliner on their bottom lid. The metallic inspiration was repeated on the accessories: the silver platform sandals responded to aviator-style shiny sunglasses, silver gloves and many pearl necklaces and bangles that gave the silhouettes that unique Chanel signature look. For Lagerfeld, more is more: the prolific, tireless designer presented nearly 100 different silhouettes, showing just about the widest range of shapes and patterns one could hope for. The collection went graphic with the use of prints from abstract squares to mini-airplaines to multicolored flowers, and we can picture any girl or woman wanting to wear one – well, many – of the pieces that were presented. There is something for any type of traveler: the cool girl from the around the block will certainly go for a silhouette with a boyish cap for her trip around East Europe, while the stylish businesswomen already has her eye on the sharp-looking, tailored jackets and pencil skirts, which she’ll wear on her next business trip to New York.
