WALTER VAN BEIRENDONCK SS17: A BACKSTAGE STORY
Walter Van Beirendonck SS17. For his Spring-Summer 2017 collection, Walter Van Beirendonck takes the infamous Alice in Wonderland riddle, « Why is a raven like a writing-desk » as a starting point. Indeed, his creations (rightfully qualified as « wearable artpieces » on the show notes) have something of an enigma that we can’t stop to look at. Tapping into the fairytale aesthetic with color-blocking themes, big side hair, and extravagant overalls, the legendary Belgian designer still manages to anchor his collection into reality, throwing words like « Brutal beauty, » « Future folk, » or « Reflection through destruction » onto his garments. Vibrant animal prints bring the fantasy along with the unmissable Beirendonck faces which he creates using an assemblage of chains and accessories. Finally, metallic trousers and jackets found in fuchsia or green turn up the volume for an irreverent result. Brutal beauty is the beauty we stand for.
