70s GLAM ROCK AT SAINT LAURENT MEN’S SUMMER 2020

By Alice Butterlin

Los Angeles has been attracting more and more Europeans these past few years so it is no surprise that Anthony Vaccarello chose Malibu beach to stage the Saint Laurent Summer 2020 menswear show. The collection had a certain L.A essence, that kind of effortless breezy west-coast look but also conveyed flashes of Marrakesh, a city dear to Yves Saint Laurent’s heart. Traditional Moroccan garments were reimagined and blended with the rock’n’roll spirit of the 70s. Glam rock slim-fitted suits in all black, white or covered in sequins met with skinny ties and wide-open silk printed shirt. Djellabas made an appearance in sheer black or white, followed by tasseled hoods and heavy rich silver jewelry. You could almost smell the incense through the pictures.

Men’s tailoring is definitely making a come back after years of sportswear dominating the runways. Even though Saint Laurent has always stayed true to a certain old-school aesthetic, never giving in to passing trends. Mick Jagger was cited as an influence and even lended some of his YSL archive pieces to Vaccarello to serve as inspiration. It’s interesting to note the house seems impervious to rap and computer music dominating the charts, choosing instead to revel in an era made of electric guitars and analog synths. Being in the margins of mainstream style is what makes the Saint Laurent man stand out from the crowd. Discover some of the looks below.
