YOHJI YAMAMOTO MEN’S SS17: A BACKSTAGE STORY

This season, the Yohji Yamamoto men are tough guys showing their softer side. With extra facial hair and their heads and wrists wrapped in bandages, they look like they’ve experienced it all. Looking at the audience while walking in long, short-sleeved overcoats paired with flare shirts and wide, ankle-long trousers, they convey a sensation of natural self-confidence. There’s also a certain sense of humor with statements painted onto the backs of some coats, like « I’m a slumber, » or « Wait until dark. » Painted illustrations are recurrent in the collection, and often represent Mr Yamamoto’s face with his incomparable benevolent smile. At the end of the show, a few of the models took off their coats, turned them upside down, and put it back on to show a whole new piece underneath – for the pleasure of everyone in the room.
