BACK TO ABRAXAS

By Crash

Photographed at two spaces in greater Paris designed by the Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill, this series confronts the utopian schemes of collective and social housing with Fall/Winter 2019 fashion lines. One is the vast retrofuturist city of Abraxas and its powder pink concrete that has lent a backdrop to many films; the other is the Arcades du Lac complex in Voisins-le-Bretonneux and its unique blend of historical forms and modern materials. These spaces intrigue as much for their unique silhouettes as for their innovative function. However, more than thirty-five years after their construction, the architect has expressed his sense of failure in the face of his desire to change the French architectural system and make the Paris suburbs more livable.
