LANVIN S/S 2021: YU GARDEN

By Crash

Bruno Sialelli presented the Lanvin Spring/Summer 2021 show yesterday in Shanghai, in the heart of the Yu Garden, a 16th century neighborhood in the city whose name can be translated into English as « The Garden of Happiness ». The location is very meaningful: a green setting in the heart of the city, a symbol of Chinese history in a metropolis famous for its modernity. This link between past and present, between the historical and the contemporary inspired the approach of the collection, a reinterpretation of the heritage of the house, its archives and its philosophy.

The influence of Chinese culture on art and fashion of the 1920s is a fundamental source of inspiration for this show. In a context of permanent cultural exchange between China and France, merging into a simultaneous celebration of both cultures and their shared love of luxury, the limited, the unique. The silhouettes and fabrics are sensual, draped on the body. Men wear soft suits, as casual as pyjamas, women’s dresses are draped softly over their bodies and are sometimes weighted with chainmail details, another nod to Jeanne Lanvin’s work and her limitless innovations. The garments also refer to Wen Goldfish, embroidered or woven in silk velvet threads. Gold is a key color: a whole spectrum, from the palest blond to pink, passing through ochre and the golden metallics of lamé and leather.
