Galerie Chantal Crousel is pleased to host the fifth solo exhibition of Heimo Zobernig’s work, featuring a group of historic works from the 1980s that have been brought together for the first time in Europe. The Viennese artist’s graphic and sculptural works chosen for this exhibition, traces his artistic and creative life over the last forty years.

Heimo Zobernig, a key figure in the Austrian art scene, is one of the most acclaimed and important artists of his generation. Since 1980 he has often been recognized for his multifaceted practice consisting of the use of different media such as video, performance, painting, sculpture, installation, architecture and design. From Heimo Zobernig’s works, it is clear to understand how he is the only true creator of the obligations he imposes on himself, following strictly personal rules; the technique of making the works, although it may seem inaccurate to the eye, shows dedication, study and value. 

Exploring the artistic currents of the 20th century, such as constructivism, geometric abstraction or minimalism, the Viennese artist questions and interrogates the art system, its way of existing and operating, and of course its irregular ideology. The exhibition will reveal the artist’s works on A4 sheets, made with comprising ink, felt pen or gouache. This series is an intimate, hidden and protected work by the artist that stems from his analysis of his everyday impressions and expressions; Next, a series of small abstract objects foreshadow the artist’s painting practice, which is strongly inspired by modernism devoid of all symbolism and narrative content. These works are a small foreshadowing of the architectural works and installations that the artist has been realising since the 1990s.
