It was December 2017 when artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen (born 1969 in London, UK) created a work of art as a response to the terrible fire that occurred on June 14 of that year at Grenfell Tower in North Kensington, West London. Seventy-two people died in the tragedy.
By filming the tower before it was completely secured, McQueen makes a true testimony so that this tragic event would never be forgotten.
Grenfell will be presented at the Serpentine South Gallery from April 7th to May 10th, 2023.

Steve McQueen was born in West London in 1969 and studied fine arts at Goldsmiths College, where he became interested in film.
Over the past 30 years, McQueen has demonstrated how cinema is a true art by influencing the growth and spread of the way artists of various kinds work with film and its attached world.  He has made several feature films that have received numerous awards, including the Academy Award for Best Picture for 12 Years a Slave (2013). As an artist, McQueen won the Turner Prize in 1999 and represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 2009. McQueen’s works are preserved and exhibited in public museums around the world. He lives and works in London and Amsterdam.
