SAINT LAURENT MAKES (NEW) WAVES WITH AN EXCLUSIVE JEAN-LUC GODARD PROJECT AT CANNES FESTIVAL

By Léo Mazzella

Hold your cameras, Saint Laurent productions will present an unfinished project by the late Jean Luc Godard, founding father of « La Nouvelle Vague » (every intellectual’s favorite cinema movement), at the 76th Cannes Festival.

While Yves Saint Laurent and Jean-Luc Godard’s works didn’t cross paths during their careers, they both loved their muses and elevated them to near goddesses figures.

Both Godard and Saint Laurent challenged traditional gender roles through their work. Godard used to feature strong, independent female characters in his films, who were not defined by their relationships with men. Meanwhile, Saint Laurent was known for creating clothing that allowed women to move more freely and comfortably, challenging the strict and traditional ideas of femininity at the time.

Their relationships with beauty dictated their lives as the need to create pieces of art that shaped the worlds they were living in. Everything they produced was a door, open to let us explore a small part of their genius minds.

As true creative visionaries, they changed the way we look at films or clothes forever by following their heart and never conforming to rules.

It is therefore no surprise that Anthony Vaccarello is an admirer of Godard : « I greatly admired Jean-Luc Godard, one of cinema’s most influential masterminds » the creative director said.

Titled as « Trailer of a movie that will never exist », the art project was the last one Jean-Luc Godard was working on before he passed away (in September 2022). We can expect a dive into the director’s mind, his ideas, points of view and references.

This unconventional visual piece is one of the two films presented by Saint Laurent Productions at the Cannes Festival, the second one being directed by Pablo Almodóvar.

Saint Laurent surely starts with a bang with these two projects as their firsts and we certainly can’t wait to discover what they will produce next, as well as how far Anthony Vaccarello wants to expand the brand’s impact and influence.
