BLESS AND FENDI COLLABORATION AT DESIGN MIAMI 2023

By Martina Conte

In an innovative collaboration, Bless, the transdisciplinary studio founded by Desiree Heiss and Ines Kaag, has joined forces with iconic fashion powerhouse Fendi to create an immersive experience at Design Miami 2023. With a history spanning almost 25 years, Bless has consistently pushed the boundaries between art and design, and their partnership with Fendi is a testament to their innovative approach.

Bless’ proposal for Design Miami 2023 is nothing short of a visual playground, showcasing multifaceted approaches that highlight the strengths and complexity of Fendi. The centerpiece of their booth is a collection of four double-sided paravents, created in collaboration with Fendi Casa. These large panels not only serve as visual elements but also incorporate functional aspects, such as seating, tables, and storage, on their backsides. Each paravent unfolds a different theme, evoking various aspects of Fendi’s rich history and contemporary identity.

The booth is carefully designed to transport visitors into micro universes, allowing them to immerse themselves in exported fragments of Fendi’s world. A mirroring effect is created with fabric-covered walls adorned with composite photographs of the paravents’ backsides, further enhancing the immersive experience. Additionally, smaller products, including the Bless N°07 Chairwear B and a broom covered in goatskin glove leather, engage in a visual « conversation » with the paravents. The intent of Bless is to pay homage to Fendi’s Couture Maison heritage by incorporating materials such as shearling, printed calf leather, lamb leather, and Merino wool in an intricately illustrated intarsia technique blanket. This blanket portrays a daily ‘backstage’ scene at Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, chosen by Bless to honor FendiI’s craft heritage.

The Protective Sister Bag and Protective Brother Carton Bag, Bless’ interpretation of Fendi’s iconic Peekaboo bag, showcase a collaborative and multifaceted spirit. The design remains true to the original, while incorporating traces of parcels exchanged between Bless studios and Fendi, adding layers of visibility to their ongoing dialogue.

As a testament to their enduring impact, Bless is set to be featured in an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome (MACRO) in February 2024. This showcase will delve into over 25 years of Bless products, situations, and collaborations, providing a comprehensive view of the « situation designers' » creative journey.

The Bless and Fendi collaboration at Design Miami/ 2023 is a fusion of creativity, functionality, and celebration—a testament to the enduring spirit of innovation in art, design, and fashion.
