BACKSTAGE AT WALTER VAN BEIRENDONCK’S F/W24 : « BANANA WINK BOOM! »

By Iris Jeanson

Belgian designer Walter Van Beirendonck takes fashion on a whimsical journey with his Fall/Winter 24 Collection. In a press release revealing his unconventional creative process, Van Beirendonck describes playing a « Frankensteinian art game » with his mind, resulting in a clash of tops and bottoms akin to a visual game of telephone.

The collection, influenced by the Surrealist technique ‘Cadavre Exquis,’ embraces the unexpected with new holes, loops, and a deep connection to Belgian surrealism. Van Beirendonck’s playful exclamation, « BANANA WINK BOOM! » adds an enigmatic touch, leaving the interpretation open-ended.

Revisiting his own history, the designer incorporates styling and make-up techniques from 30 years ago, complemented by hats from Stephen Jones and accessories from his archive. The press release invites fashion enthusiasts to embrace freedom and less automation, preparing for a new era of fetishism by plugging into a metaphorical « pleasure portal. »

Echoing David Bowie’s desire to be « something more than human, » Van Beirendonck sees beauty in the fragments he pieces together. The WALTER VAN BEIRENDONCK Fall/Winter 24 Collection promises a celebration of the unconventional, inviting individuals to immerse themselves in a surreal universe of extraordinary fashion.
