BACKSTAGE AT SACAI SPRING-SUMMER 25 FASHION SHOW

By Chloe Edstein

This season, Chitose Abe draws inspiration from James Dean’s sentiment, “I think the prime reason for existence, for living in this world, is discovery,” channelling his curiosity, honesty, freedom, and innocent naivety. This serves as the foundation for her signature re-mixing and re-inventing of familiar silhouettes and proportions, along with her perennial hybridization, to uncover and create something new and unexpected.

For women, this vision materializes in strong, architectural shoulders and pants with exaggerated volume, applied to classic archetypes.

For men, Abe reinterprets Dean’s Harrington jacket, blending it with Sacai’s distinctive shapes, and adding the charm of vintage car and flower prints. Models carry books and wear glasses, evoking the essence of academia and youth, embodying discovery in motion.

A new collaboration with Levi’s reimagines hybrids of the Type I, II, and III jackets, sculpted, waisted, and bonded to denim pants to form a single piece. Japan’s esteemed WTAPS introduce their military-inspired style to Sacai’s hybridization. Traditional J.M. Weston penny loafers are transformed into something entirely new. Additionally, Nike and Sacai debuted the Zegamadome sneaker.

The set design, inspired by Dennis Stock’s iconic photo of Dean in front of his childhood home, reflects the collection’s youthful attitude. Models embody the spirit of coming of age as they exit the deconstructed home one by one, narrating a story of growth and self-discovery.
