A MEETING WITH JOHN C. JAY

By Crash redaction

John C. Jay is arguably one of the most influential design forces in the world. Currently president of global creation at fast retailing, the umbrella brand that is home to Japanese apparel label Uniqlo, he has led an astounding career working with some of the world’s biggest retail giants, from Microsoft and Coca Cola to Nike and Bloomingdale’s. Revered by a range of consumers that is as diverse as their product offering, Uniqlo champions minimalist and functional workwear staples, high performance sportswear, and even holds a place at the helm within cult fashion circles thanks to the continuously evolving “UT project” (Uniqlo T-shirt for those not in the know) which engages both internationally renowned artists (think Warhol reworks, Peter Saville, Keith Haring, Lawrence Weiner) and local, lesser known newcomers, bringing important works to fresh and unexclusive audiences. We met with John C. Jay at the dawn of Uniqlo’s latest collaboration with the Louvre here in Paris. the award-winning creative talks about the role of art in modern society, the importance of the print industry, equality, democracy and respect, and the invention of the audible logo.
