ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND 150TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION DESIGNED BY VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

150 years ago, a legendary book was released: Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland by Sir Lewis Caroll. In a wish to celebrate the anniversary of the famous book, Vintage Classics will publish an anniversary special edition and called noneless than Dame Vivienne Westwood to collaborate on the object. An evident collaboration between the whimsical world of Caroll and the storytelling talent of the british designer. Dame Vivienne Westwood took inspiration from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in the past i.e for her Vivienne Westwood Red Label Autumn-Winter 2011/12 collection. The tale is known to be her favorite. For this special reedition, Westwood created an original front cover and end paper. Her contribution extends to an very personal introduction in which she explains Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland‘s deep connexion to her personal manifesto for positive activism. « I think Lewis Carroll is a genius who had a fantastic rapport with kids. The Alice books are so stimulating to read. They make you believe you could be in a parallel world – or that the world we think we know reflects the way we are programmed to see it. Maybe! It’s not like that at all » said Westwood.

The cover was inspired by Commedia dell’arte Harlequin’s costumes, which prints has been synonymous with the Westwood brand for almost 40 years. The best-known character from the Commedia dell’arte is also the perfect choice for Alice’s adventures and his malicious, trickster but yet always comic spirit perfectly represents the fantastic Wonderland. This anniversary edition also includes « Through the Looking Glass » and the original Tenniel illustrations. It was a wish from Westwood, who explains: « When you read Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, you’ll see the original drawings by Tenniel which also help to make the book so sensational. They are how we normally think of Alice – a little girl with a band holding her hair back. Because they are so brilliant, the drawings are an important part of appreciating the story. »
