AWARE CELEBRATES 1000 WOMEN ARTISTS

By Crash redaction

Since its creation in 2014, AWARE has been working to make women artists of the19th and 20th centuries visible by posting articles about their work for free in English and French. Among these, a directory gathering biographies of women artists in the field of visual arts, born between 1790 and 1972, without limits of medium or country. With Miriam Cahn, Joan Mitchell, Niki de Saint Phalle and Frida Kahlo, AWARE has just reached the symbolic figure of 1,000 biographies published on its website, texts that are not only incredible resources, but also a piece of history being affirmed.

The thousands of women who have been mentioned and recounted over the years on the AWARE website have seen contributions from many different entities, whose publications and research have enabled the stories of these women to be told and remembered once again. Partnerships with museums, universities and cultural realities in France and abroad, extensive research programs and contributions from hundreds of art historians are contributing to the growing development of its database, with new artist profiles and research articles being put online every week. In addition to the bibliographic records published on its website, AWARE also offers various contents – podcasts, cartoons for children, and thematic tours on major art historical subjects, round tables and study trip in France and abroad- to help the public better  understand or discover the works and lives of these women.
