BACKSTAGE AT COURRÈGES A/W 2019

By Alice Butterlin

It was the second collection for Yolanda Zobel, who has made her debut at Courrèges last September. While her first attempt was a bit wobbly, she seems to have more firmly understood what it is she wants to accomplish with the house. Courrèges obviously has an imposing heritage and still retains a very 60s/70s aesthetic, even five decades later. Zobel tapped into that nostalgia, including classic shapes and pieces that were easily recognizable on the runway, like the structured cropped jackets updated with shearling and insets of metallic leather or the 60s mid-calf rounded toe boots. Space Age was definitely there and the setting was a clear nod to the beginnings of Courrèges. Situated in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, The Espace Niemayer was inaugurated in 1971 and has since been the headquarters of the French Communist party. It’s in the amazing auditorium of the building that models walked in icy all-white outfits with touches of black, silver and bright red. The looks were elevated by a collaboration with the French artist Vava Dudu, whose tongue-in-cheek erotic drawings were found on multiple pieces. With Yolanda Zobel, the Courrèges legacy seems to find its place in the present.
