ISSEY MIYAKE FALL WINTER 2016: A BACKSTAGE STORY

Arriving in the venue of the Issey Miyake Fall Winter 2016 this Friday, you could sense you were about to witness something great. The show started on an incredible live music performance by Ei Wada & Haruka Yoshida from the Open Reel Ensemble, who transform light into sound though several fan’s blades using photosensitive sensors. Performing a new interpretation of Pachelbel’s Canon, they set the tone for powerful show. On the runway, Creative Director Yoshiyuki Miyamae explores fabric manipulation further with a series of pleated dresses using the « Baked Stretch » process, which consists in printing cloth with a special glue and extend it with heat in order to created the pleats. The combinations of colors were exquisite, going from purple to yellow and blue. Towards the middle of the show, simpler burgundy blouses were just as exciting, and the « 3D Stream Stretch » technique was showcased in new ways on very graphic pieces, ending the show with a spectacular red cape-dress that left an indelible imprint. There is no House other than Issey Miyake to push designer further than one could imagine, and Yoshiyuki Miyamae’s work is truly visionary.
