MASHAMA SS17: A BACKSTAGE STORY
Designer Masha Ma presents a collection imbued with accentuated sensuality this season. She took inspiration from Wim Wenders’ Wings of Desire and how the film travels from a black & white aesthetic to color. Colors are used with a minimalist flair but they pop when they need to, especially bright yellow on separate pieces and the different shades of purple or yellow sprayed on thigh-high boots. In contrast, collapsing volumes in light chiffon, silk satin, and organza georgette are found in soft shades of nude and pastel, which gives the collection that ultra-feminine feel. Even though delicate details such as ruffles and ostrich feathers are a collection staple, the MashaMa woman is all about strength; she likes her jackets broad-shouldered and her trousers with multiple zipped pockets. The collection exudes a surrealistic mood: with a deconstructed approach, it offers a range of silver jackets and trousers that are cut-out and linked by series of metallic chains. It is the wardrobe of a contemporary, independent, and never silent woman.
