CHALAYAN OPENS FIRST STORE IN LONDON

LONDON MAYFAIR DISTRICT WELCOMES FIRST-EVER CHALAYAN STORE

For two decades now, Hussein Chalayan has been one of the most visionary and boundary-pushing designers internationally. With his experimental approach to fashion, the bridges between clothes and technology he allows, and the impactful purity of his presentations, the designer was at the top of the 90s. Today, the Chalayan brand is celebrating 21 years in business with the opening of its first-ever store in London’s Mayfair district, an area known for its cultural and artistic life. Located at 2 Bourdon Street, the boutique is just a few steps away from the soon-to-be-opened Gagosian Gallery. The store design was placed under the artistic direction of Hussein Chalayan himself along with Zoe Smith (ZCD Architects), who managed to translate into architectural design the designer’s vision. The store offers a spacious environment where fashion and architecture merge. An iron black frame follows the boutique’s inner walls, and supports mannequins and hangers where clothes are displayed. On a white floor with geometrical patterns, a black wooden bark sits at the center. On the window display, four mannequins are aligned, reminding us of the iconic finale of Mr. Chalayan’s Spring-Summer 1998 « Between » collection. « We are thrilled to open our first flagship store in London, for me the most important metropole in the world, where I grew up and to which I owe my development as a designer », says Chalayan.
