CHRISTOFLE: A BRILLIANT HISTORY IN SILVER
By Iris JEANSON
Founded in the early 1830s by Charles Christofle, the house made silverware more accessible by pioneering electroplating techniques. Over the years, the brand has collaborated with leading designers like Gio Ponti, Andrée Putman, Karl Lagerfeld, and Pharrell Williams, pushing the boundaries of silver craftsmanship. The exhibition brings together nearly 1,000 objects, from jewelry and silverware to paintings and advertising materials, offering a broad look at Christofle’s evolution.
The exhibition gives an inside look at Christofle’s impact on decorative arts, with displays of workshop reconstructions, demonstrations of silver-plating and gilding, and shows how the brand has furnished everything from luxury hotels and iconic trains to European palaces and diplomatic receptions. The exhibition also explores his role in artistic movements like Japonisme, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco, showing how Christofle’s design evolved over time.
Christofle seamlessly blends artistry and function, continually redefining the world of silverware.
