As part of the « See Now, Buy Now » schedule, Collection 04 from Area explored concepts of ancient architecture, worship, and fetish demonstrated through shape, construction, and signature embellishment. It was through studying the construction of ancient architecture, that the team at Area were able to develop a folded pyramid motif that was multiplied and hand sewn to create spherical column gowns, skirts, and bodysuits of structured silk-wool, vibrant silk-duchesse, and Japanese selvage denim. They then took this technique and translated it into 24K gold & Swarovski accessories and headpieces reminiscent of pyramids reflecting the sun.

Evoking a punk fetish spirit, the pieces felt aggressively beautiful and protective in their appearance. Researching an artistic approach to shape and geometry, they looked at Wenzel Jamnitzer’s ‘Perspectiva Corporum Regularium’ and rendered the figures into 3D-printed cones that were hand-set with hundreds of Swarovski crystals. Spikes were mounted on embroidered straps and constructed into hardcore evening coats and cocktail dresses that demanded presence. 

Further exploring these themes of bondage they looked at the work of German artist Cora Korsett, contrasting the extremes of BDSM & fetish with the classic femininity of bows. We created cage-like corset structures scattered with folded bow shapes to create sexy evening dresses and couture pannier jeans. From there, this motif was developed into metal ribbons encrusted with rhinestones that wrapped and pulsed around the body. Culminating in a celebration of queerness, they translated these pieces into opulent airbrushed headpieces crafted of rainbow ombré crystal. 

They also took the opportunity to tease a special collaboration with Sergio Rossi, the iconic Italian women’s footwear brand, synonymous with Italian craftsmanship, femininity and elegance. Including sandals, gladiators, pumps and slingback, the upcoming exclusive capsule collection is to feature twenty exclusive models will be presented and sold starting February 2023 and available on sergiorossi.com and area.nyc and in selected and exclusive department stores.
