ON THE RUNWAY: COMME DES GARÇONS HOMME PLUS FALL 2016
We live in a tormented world. Taking a look back on what the last year has brought the citizen the world, there is something to be said about finding that place of peace and quiet again. But to withdraw into oneself is not a solution, though it has been a clear influence on menswear collections: over-protecting garments, so thick they tend to hide rather than make us thrive, military-inspired collections where war and pain seem like a constant concern. Rei Kawakubo, as only she knows how to do, goes countercurrent. Her reinforced tailored pieces adorn several subtle prints in comforting patchworks: saturated flowers, swirls of colors, geometrical patterns… Her designs are perfectly fitting, filling the gap between the past and our future. Almost all models were wearing crowns of flowers as headpieces, which gave them that unearthly look, almost ethereal. In the final, they were carrying big bouquets of multicolor flowers, like an anti-protest. Kawakubo delivers a strong message here: there is still a peaceful place to be found in ourselves and in our world.
