CRASH 10 BEST FASHION FILMS SELECTION / DIOR HOMME « THE LETTER » BY WILLY VANDERPERRE

By Crash redaction

« The Letter » is the result of the collaboration between Dior Homme creative director Kris Van Assche and Willy Vanderperre. Unveiled on February 5th, 2015, the film is based on a letter handwritten by Christian Dior, which Kris Van Assche found in the House’s archives. Mr Dior handwriting served as model for a print that can be found on this collection’s shirts, pants, jackets and ties, which the models sport in both the campaign’s film and pictures.

“In many ways the models play the role of Mr Dior both in the film and the photographs,” says Kris Van Assche. “There is a notion of a young poet with a real daily life in both. The black and white photography symbolises the imagination and creativity, while the colour is realness and pleasure. It is the combination of the introvert and the extrovert, the imagined and the real that is expanded on from the collection.”

“In the still campaign I wanted to focus on almost confrontational portraits,” explains Willy Vanderperre. “There is the collision of two worlds both in the
photographs and the film. Both are intentionally shot in black and white because of the rich and sensitive contrast in greys that are so related to the figure of Mr Dior; these are placed alongside the disruption of colour portraiture. In the film, the double layers evokes something romantic, quiet and reflective while the letter is written – but there is also the idea that you are never alone with your thoughts.”
