DELVAUX SS24

By Martina Conte

Mutualism, the natural phenomenon describing a beneficial exchange between different species, finds a new and unexpected expression in the collaboration between the Belgian fashion house Delvaux and the Belgian artist Kasper Bosmans for their 2024 collection. This creative fusion embodies Delvaux’s longstanding tradition of blending art, culture, and craftsmanship.

The genesis of this remarkable collaboration traces its roots to Kasper Bosmans’ versatile body of work, drawing inspiration from a variety of historical references, symbols, and forms. During a visit to an exhibition at the Wiels Foundation in 2022, Jean-Marc Loubier, CEO of Delvaux, discovered Bosmans’ work and identified intriguing parallels with Delvaux’s philosophy, particularly concerning heraldry, a powerful graphic expression of multiple identities. This sparked a deep dialogue and research that led to a harmonious and surprising creative proposal. This collaboration between Delvaux and Bosmans demonstrates that mutualism is also a matter of will.
The collection resulting from this dialogue explores powerful historical themes and highlights unexpected synergies between two seemingly distant players: the young artist and the world’s oldest luxury leather goods house. The 11 interpretations of Delvaux’s iconic pieces combine cutting-edge knowledge and traditional techniques to tell stories of heroism, integrity, wisdom, and ever-evolving identity. The presentation of the collection is both conceptual, concrete, and tactile, inviting viewers to experience, wander, reflect, and share their discoveries and impressions. Unlike some collaborations that leave little impact, Delvaux’s commitment and dedication, combined with Bosmans’ artistic vision, achieve true mutualism.

This creative union goes beyond the mere design of clothing and accessories, involving partnerships with skilled artisans. Robert Dufour’s workshop, a master upholsterer with 500 years of history in Aubusson, contributes to the collection’s authenticity and excellence. Extraordinary leather marquetry and collaboration with the last remaining Emaillerie Belge in Belgium bring a unique dimension to each piece. But the centerpiece of this collaboration is undoubtedly the presence of Kasper Bosmans himself, who spent several weeks painting his frescoes within Delvaux’s workshops in Brussels, alongside the artisans. This full immersion in the creative process underscores the strength of dialogue and collaboration, where strong identities are forged in coexistence rather than solitude.

The Delvaux x Kasper Bosmans collection for 2024 embodies the essence of mutualism, where two seemingly distinct worlds come together to create creative harmony. This bold collaboration between Delvaux and artist Kasper Bosmans is more than just a fashion collection; it is a total work of art that transcends the boundaries between object and art, between past and present. It celebrates the power of collaboration and the ever-evolving nature of identity through art and craftsmanship.
