« THE OTHERS » : DEREK RIDGERS’ NEW BOOK
By Crash redaction
IDEA PUBLISHES « THE OTHERS », A BOOK BY DEREK RIDGERS
On November 12th, Derek Ridgers launched his new book, The Others. The book brings us into the London nightlife in the 80s with a hundred photographs taken inside clubs and parties. The title of the book, simple but full of meaning, originally came from the name the photographer’s gave to a folder in his hard drive, where he gathered about 650 photographs. With his intimate yet very raw approach to photography, it’s the individuality and vulnerability of Ridger’s subjects that catches the eye and makes an impact. It is all about these people, they are the others but they might as well be close to us. As Ridgers puts it: “The people in this book are less identifiable as part of a clearly defined youth cult. They are not all punks or skinheads or new romantics: these are the others.” The foreword of the book was written by Richard Habberley, original Blitz kid and now a New York based model agent. The book launch took place at the Comme des Garçons Trading Museum in Paris, and was hosted by IDEA and the designer Kim Jones. The Others is the 4th book to be published by IDEA in 2015, and only 1,000 copies have been printed, which makes it a collector. Derek Ridgers’ previous book on London Youth was When We Were Young. For IDEA, The Others is Derek Ridgers’ best work and reaffirms his place as a great photographer of youth and youth culture.
The book is now available exclusively at Dover Street Market, Marc Jacobs’ Bookmarc stores and online at www.idea-books.com.
