DOLORÈS MARAT, WINNER OF THE 2023 ROBERT DELPIRE BOOK PRIZE.
By Max Mendel
Marat, born in 1944, began her personal work in the mid-1990s. Her self-taught approach, shaped by the « Fresson » process, transforms everyday scenes into poetic dreamscapes. Over 60 photographs capture anonymous figures, street animals, and hidden city spaces. Printed on Japanese Fine Art paper, each image uses vivid yet soft tones to create a realm that’s both familiar and ethereal.
The exhibition complements Marat’s new book, with images that explore fleeting, overlooked moments. Shadowed corridors, quiet metro stations, and hushed urban streets fill her frames. These spaces, more than mere settings, evoke emotions that emulate a timeless dreamscape deeply rooted in the psyche.
The collaboration with the Neuf Cinq Endowment Fund and MEP honors Delpire’s legacy of capturing authentic visions. Marat’s work is less a documentation and more an experience, offering sensory glimpses that invite reflection.
Dolorès Marat presents a body of work that is hauntingly nuanced, intimate yet universal. Marat’s images drift between shadows and light, calling forth a delicate, almost tactile reverie that invites viewers to engage with the ephemeral nature of the experience itself.
