ELIE SAAB HAUTE COUTURE FW16 : A BACKSTAGE STORY
This season, the Elie Saab Fall-Winter 2016 Haute Couture collection was inspired by New York’s golden age of the 20s and 30s. In-between fairytale and gala, the models were transformed in seducing creatures of the night, ready for when the city becomes alive. The color palette focuses on black, burgundy and dark blue, and the fabrics are richly embroidered with feathers, crystals, pearls and paillettes. A play on transparency appears on velvet capes and evening dresses, with strong necklines and tears showing legs. Swallow-shaped embroideries were everywhere: from blue little swallows in textiles on a sheer black dress to precious swallow-shaped brooches made of Swarovski crystals on asymmetric a blue velvet dress. On some pieces of the collection, feathers gave a 20s vibe to paillettes decorated tight dresses, reminding us of Josephine Baker. Along the main silhouettes, smaller versions of those same dresses were sometimes showcased on young girls: they are mini Elie Saab pieces revisited as to be paired with their adult version. Flowers blossomed through the end of the collection, embroidered on tulle and sheer, to end up with a magnificent wedding dress in pink and yellow delicate tonalities.
