GUCCI S/S 2019: A VISION BY FRANK PERRIN

Following in the steps of his previous shows, Alessandro Michele delivered a collection that mixed references from past decades and subcultures while giving off a very futuristic vibe. How does Gucci attain this vintage aesthetic while never seeming old or out-of-touch? It is a tough question and one would have to infiltrate Michele’s twisted mind to find the answer. Basing his show around the 70s avant-garde Italian theatre actors and directors Leo de Berardinis and Perla Peragallo, the Italian designer chose the iconic Parisian club Le Palace to serve as a gloomy stage for anti-conformism, insanity and quirkiness.

Models were clad in feathers, glitter, lurex and fringe, prancing around the dim-lit club like they were ready to party until dawn. Nods to BDSM were seen on bedazzled jockstraps, men in snug underwear and long denim chaps held by suspenders. An amateur of contradictions, Michele mixed sex with modesty and a nerdy attitude. The show came to an end with a small performance by Jane Birkin singing « Baby alone in Babylone », giving the event an even more mystical turn.
