HED MAYNER FOR DESIGUAL

By Roisin Breen

Desigual has launched its first 100% genderless collection, a limited edition run of twelve essential pieces to build a functional wardrobe base, flaunting the very best of savoir-faire and heritage production. Created in collaboration with designer Hed Mayner, the collection first dropped in Tokyo yesterday in the first of a trickle of global releases, with Paris following suit today, followed by Berlin, Madrid, Florence, and Barcelona. It’s a highly exclusive capsule, produced in exceptional materials to the very highest of specs, the pieces are designed to last a lifetime. Boldly embodying the meaning of a capsule wardrobe, it’s a more classic contemporary look than we are used to seeing from the typically edgy brand, and it’s a look that fits exceptionally well.

Large oversized pants, with a sophisticated stripe details, a billowing kimono-style overcoat, a huge must-have tote bag, a reimagining of denim classics, all the pieces exude tradition and technical know-how, the minimal aesthetic giving way to more complex, structured interiors that give it the Desigual stamp.

Even the essentials have been given names that reveal the construction and concept behind each one: the definitive canvas pants, the so-not-obvious ruby t-shirt, the more- than-a-coat uniform coat, and so on. The collection also includes a pair of shoes available on request, the so-called elegantly eco leather shoes.

Trained at the prestigious French Fashion Institute in Paris, Hed Mayner is a designer who makes a solid commitment to quality and technique, thoughtful design is his hallmark and modernized classic menswear pieces have become his signature. He took home the coveted LVMH Karl Lagerfeld Prize in 2019 and has become one of the French capital’s key young designers to lookout for.

One of the first ever truly sustainable brands out there, Desigual began life as the first true rework brand in Barcelona, 1984. Instead of shouting about their efforts, like any number of active brands these days, Desigual has been quietly working away at making itself better, more eco-responsable, more sustainable, now boasting an almost zero-waste impact (in 2022 they managed to recover 97.4% of the 1,040 tons of waste in their buildings and stores in Spain, meaning only 2.6% is destined for disposal.)
