IVAN ARGOTE PRESENTS « DESCANSO » INSTALLATION AT 60TH VENICE BIENNALE ART EXHIBITION

By Aicha NDIAYE

Colombian artist Ivan Argote, presents his latest installation « Descanso, » at the 60th Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.

Argote’s artistic journey is deeply rooted in themes of resistance and migration, reflecting his personal experience of moving from Colombia to France. His artwork challenges crafting monumental sculptures and installations  in public spaces that peel back layers of time and meaning.

His work is celebrated and resides in prestigious collections worldwide, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York,  Centre Pompidou in Paris, and Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation in Miami.

« Descanso » stands as an anti-monument, beckoning viewers to contemplate a paradigm shift. It reimagines the statue of Christopher Columbus in Madrid’s Plaza Colón, toppled and engulfed by a riot of invasive weeds and plants native and migrant symbolizing a vibrant and harmonious reclamation of space.

This installation serves as a sanctuary from colonial legacies, urging a departure from antiquated heroisms glorifying violence against diverse peoples. Instead, it champions life and a new era harmonized with others and nature.

Displayed in the Giardini at the Biennale Art Exhibition, « Descanso » transforms the political symbolism of the statue into vessels for natural vitality, embodying a poignant juxtaposition of historical reckoning and ecological stewardship.

Complementing the installation is Argote’s video work, « Paseo, » showcased in the Arsenale. This cinematic exploration constructs a decolonial narrative, envisioning the Columbus statue traversing Madrid in exile. Through this deconstruction, Argote underscores his dedication to confronting historical injustices and environmental crises.

With « Descanso, » Ivan Argote invites us to confront the past, reimagine the present, and chart a course towards a more inclusive and sustainable future.
