JORJA SMITH RELEASES NEW SINGLE ‘HIGH’

By Chloe Edstein

Jorja Smith returns with her new single, High, a sublime, house-tinged summer song produced by long-time collaborator DAMEDAME.

This release marks Smith’s first new music since her sophomore album, Falling or Flying. Released in September 2023, the album showcases a rich variety of sounds, blending elegant and bright R&B with intense and raw elements. This project symbolizes a new chapter for Smith, focused on self-love and self-discovery. The album received critical acclaim and was nominated for Best R&B at the 2024 BRIT Awards.

In High, Smith continues to explore themes of self-love, delving into the journey of finding friendship within oneself. DAMEDAME’s slick and assured production provides a bouncy beat over which Smith’s vocals whisper sensitively, emphasizing the importance of being gentle with oneself, especially during times of growth. The song highlights moments of joy and patience amid personal development, with poignant lyrics like, “I had my downs, you weren’t always there for me, but time showed I could love myself again.”

The single is accompanied by a video featuring candid moments of Smith and videos submitted by fans. Directed by Smith and Ivor Lawson-Adamah, the home-video aesthetic captures a sense of youthfulness, presenting a montage of people partying and enjoying life.

High not only adds another gem to Smith’s discography but also reinforces her message of self-empowerment and finding joy in the journey of growth.
