A LOOK BACK AT FONDAZIONE NICOLA TRUSSARDI’S « LA GRANDE MADRE » EXHIBITION
La Grande Madre (The Great Mother) took place from August 26 to November 15, 2016 at Fondazione Nicola Trussardi in Milan. 2015 coming to an end, we chose to take a look back at this comprehensive exhibition which gathered over 400 works by 139 international artists with one common thread: the idea of motherhood. Fondazione Nicola Trussardi teamed up with Palazzo Reale as part of ExpoinCittà 2015 to deliver this exhibition on the main floor of Palazzo Reale, curated by Massimiliani Gioni. In 20 rooms covering about 2,000 square meters, The Great Mother showed artworks from various artistic movements within the 20th century, from the avant-garde to nowadays. Louise Bourgeois, Marlene Dumas, Maurizio Cattelan, Keith Edmier, Dorothy Iannone, and Cindy Sherman were some of the artists exhibited, each representing their vision of motherhood, be it thoughtful, raw, conceptual, or subversive. The figure of the mother is a motif that has always had a special place in art history. Venerated, emancipated, sometimes objectified, women – all potential mothers – are the center of this exhibition which retraces the chronicles of their empowerment and struggles. With this exhibition, art becomes the channel through which the exploration of femininity comes to an almost complete, nearly cathartic understanding.
