LORO PIANA 100 YEARS ANNIVERSARY AND FIRST-EVER EXHIBITION “IF YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW”
By Iris JEANSON
On the occasion of its 100 year-anniversary and to pay tribute to its deep, long-standing connection to China, Loro Piana presents its first-ever exhibition at the Museum of Art Pudong in Shanghai, from March 22 to May 5, 2025. Called « IfYou Know, You Know. Loro Piana’s Quest for Excellence, » the exhibition pays homage to the Maison’s history and heritage, its craftmanship, its fibres, and its unique six-generation family legacy.
Curated by Judith Clark, the exhibition explores the Maison’s heritage, craftsmanship, and global influence. This retrospective, interpreted through the concept of landscapes with a sensory and tactile lens, combines a captivating mix of archival documents, contemporary and modern artworks, including ones from the Sergio and Luisa Loro Piana Collection – with works by Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, Enrico Castellani, Emilio Vedova– and the Pinacoteca di Varallo, heirloom fabrics and crafts, and specially created dramatic silhouettes that enhance the bond between source and object, between the territory and the fibre, while elevating Loro Piana’s savoir-faire to a new level of experimental and artistic prowess. A laboratory within the exhibition explores the preciseness of quality control and dedication to the finest fibres in the world. Spanning over 1,000 square meters, the space features an array of sensorial materials, textures, and colours that deeply reflect Loro Piana’s past and present.
A fusion of Italian and Chinese traditions, the exhibition includes a unique soundscape by artists such as Guo Wenjing and Liu Hao, as well as an intricate ink-on-paper map by Qiu Zhijie reimagining the global landscape of Sinology, the academic study of Chinese culture, language, and history.
Highlighting Loro Piana’s pursuit of excellence , miniature landscapes represent the remote regions where the brand sources its finest raw materials— New Zealand, the Andes, France, Japan, and Inner Mongolia, China — as if seen from afar.
The retrospective celebrates Loro Piana’s 100 years, blending tradition with innovation and offers a rare glimpse into the brand’s history and innovation.
