By Crash redaction
The first thing that pops into someone’s mind when they hear the name Louis Vuitton is usually the brand’s iconic LV monogram logo. The logo was created in 1896 by Georges Vuitton in honour of his late father, Louis Vuitton. The original monogram consisted of some of the first modern design symbols in France, with it’s motif of flowers and stylistic letters organized with a strong geometric element influenced by a combination of japanese blossoms and a strong neo-gothic style. The logo was revolutionary in it’s time and continues to be an iconic symbol of luxury, adventure, and the high quality and standard of craftsmanship that has made Louis Vuitton what it is today.
In honour of the long history of the Monogram, the house of Louis Vuitton has presented a select group of designers with carte blanche to create a bag and/or luggage monogram. Christian Louboutin, Cindy Sherman, Frank Gehry, Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Newson and Rei Kawakubo as the designers who will take part in honoring and re-imagining the iconic monogram.
When asked how the collaborators were selected, Delphine Arnault explained « When Nicolas Ghesquière and I talked about the exceptional talents we wanted to approach, we spontaneously sent the invitations to the best in their fields. We wanted to appeal to people who work with boldness, both with their minds and with their hands. » With such a varying collection of styles and creative approaches by each designer it allowed for a unique insight into their individual creative processes. When asked what it was like to witness such a group of talented designers working in their own ways, Arnault described the experience as «fascinating – and fun !- to see their different perspectives on the monogram, and observe their artistic process is so inspiring : they are geniuses ! »
