LOUIS VUITTON’S SS25 MEN’S COLLECTION TAKES FLIGHT

By Chloe Edstein

The Spring-Summer 2025 Men’s Collection by Louis Vuitton honors the people who share our planet. It presents a view of our species from a cosmic standpoint, emphasizing our vastness and collective strength. Pharrell Williams, the Men’s Creative Director, contemplates Louis Vuitton’s unifying approach that resonates globally. Through the collection, the House evokes its inclination for broadening perspectives through travel, highlighting our commonalities worldwide.

Imprints of travelers’ archetypal symbols are imbued in silhouettes. From cropped tailored jackets to flight suits and camionneur-collared knitwear, the pilot serves as inspiration for elements of aviation dress. The diplomat influences slender double-breasted coats and suits with the straight or flared sculpting of trousers. Comfort-driven tracksuits and refined workwear are designed for the leisure traveller. The explorer inspires sophisticated interpretations of sportswear, while garments paying tribute to football reflect the world’s most unifying game.

From a distance, silhouettes appear muted and monotone, but up close, intricate details emerge, stimulating the senses and emotions. This mirrors how skin appears uniform from afar but reveals complexity upon closer inspection. Inspired by the diverse range of human skin tones, a color palette reflects this diversity in outfits crafted from luxurious silks and sheer, tinted fabrics. Patterns and monograms feature skin-like textures, woven materials mimic animal hides, and accessories evoke the tactile qualities of skin.

Air Afrique, a creative group based in Paris, collaborated on the show’s cinematic prelude and branding, aiming to preserve the legacy of the defunct Pan-African airline. Inspired by the original Air Afrique trunks, they created tartan patterns and a Damier-infused tartan in blueish-green and brown tones for their ready-to-wear items, scarves, stoles, and bags.

Encouraging the observer to zoom in, each design is filled with intricate elements. The fastenings on clothes and bags are transformed into decorative pieces, adorned with miniature world maps, airplane motifs, pearls, and crystals. Piping appears as delicate strings of small pearls intricately sewn along the edges of athletic wear. A wide range of embroidery techniques are showcased throughout the collection, depicted in whimsical fair-isle patterns crafted from crystals, pearls, and threads, and in a windowpane Damier design embellished with pearls.

The new collection introduces a range of Soft Leather Goods. It includes classic bags from the Maison’s history, such as the Alma, the Christopher, and the Neverfull. These shapes are redesigned in extremely soft, incredibly luxurious leather with aged VVN trimmings and decorated with the iconic brown Monogram, which has been slightly enlarged. All the bags in the Soft Leather Goods collection feature metal plate charms inspired by vintage trunk tags.

The collection’s shoes draw inspiration from classic travellers. You’ll find the LV agent, featuring a square toe and thick leather sole available in black or brown glazed leather embossed with tag outlines reminiscent of the Silhouette bags. Also, the LV Bowling shoe, crafted in the collection’s skin tones, presents an elegant silhouette made of nappa leather with a rubber sole. The LV Rider cowboy boot now comes in exotic patchwork variations in black, brown, or tan, as well as in Monogram leather, suede, and python. Lastly, the LV Footprint Traveller embodies the comfort-focused essence of a globetrotter.

Pilot-inspired aviator caps feature pins as a nod to aviation, while sleek berets for agents are adorned with deep-black flocking, crystal embellishments, or fashioned into asymmetrical shapes. Leather and velvet gloves draw inspiration from spy codes, incorporating moto details and pearl decorations. Formal attire is elevated with classic silk ties and bowties, silky bandeaus, opera scarves, and cummerbunds.

The explorer counts double gilded compass brooches connected by golden chains that are fit for jewels, along with gilded sun-ray explorer brooches adorned with pearls, and rotating map pendants on strass-encrusted logo chains. Alongside Damier-patterned pavé earrings underling the microscopic-detail sensibility of the collection, pearl stud earrings – some with pearl drop pendants – appear. A globetrotting sentiment is cemented by flight insignia brooches with gems and enamel.

The collection showcases the interplay between large-scale and small-scale perspectives of humanity through carefully crafted tonal shapes, highlighting the diversity of our species while emphasizing our common origin. Louis Vuitton’s collection reflects the essence of unity.
