‘THE FUTURE IS THE DOOR, THE PAST IS THE KEY’

This was the message at Maitrepierre for SS22. Taking inspiration from Ai-dA, a robot human in appearance and programmed with an algorithm equipped with a full knowledge of the entire history of art, Maitrepierre is in a retrospective mood with ‘Algo-Archives.’

In a reflection of the robots ability to create original works by drawing on its memory of historical archives, all creations this season were his own take on works from the past, using his creativity instead to question and challenge modern society, by using technology and innovative processes to create fabrics, prints and materials. Collaborating with the programmer Adem Elahel, the pair created an algorithm that is able to create new textile prints by generating random compressions of prints and materials, in doing so, encouraging us to ponder the place of creativity and design in an increasingly digital world.

Classics were reinvented in new fabrics and digitally printed textiles; suits in jersey and fleece, nightwear cast from metal, pants and skirts worn in new ways, draped like roman togas, with heavily exaggerated high waists and delicate pops of colour. A collection entirely produced responsibly in France, using recycled fibres, non-polluting inks and natural dyes, Maitrepierre wants us to look back in order to look forward.
