MARTIN MARGIELA AUCTION : THE EARLY YEARS 1988-94

By Iris JEANSON

This Monday, January 27, 2025, an exceptional auction will celebrate the creative early works of Martin Margiela, taking place at Ologram, 81 Boulevard Voltaire, Paris 11. Organized by Maurice Auction in partnership with Kerry Taylor Auctions, this event will feature over 270 pieces from the designer’s formative years, spanning 1988 to 1994, making it the largest auction dedicated to Margiela ever held.

The collection, meticulously curated by Elena and Angela Picozzi, includes rare garments and archives inspired by their mother, Graziella Picozzi, an important figure in Italian fashion. Highlights include iconic creations from Margiela’s Spring-Summer 1990 and Autumn-Winter 1990-91 collections, such as oversized vests, hand-painted jackets, and the signature “curtain skirts.” The sale also features original sketches, patterns, and items from Margiela’s lesser-known early project, including a binder containing facsimile sketches made by hand from the Autumn-Winter 1989-1990 collection.

The auction coincides with Paris Haute Couture Week, with an exhibition running from January 25 to bring foward these rare pieces. Located in the raw, industrial setting of Ologram, the event provides a fitting homage to Margiela’s revolutionary approach to fashion.
