MARTINE ROSE PRESENTS FALL/WINTER 24 COLLECTION LOOKBOOK

By Temoso Mohuba

For the Fall/Winter 2024 collection, Martine Rose takes a different approach. Using clothes as a tool of empowerment, Rose turns the tables on presenting a collection. The collection was first showcased in early January during Milan Men’s Fashion Week. Accompanied by a look-book with images lensed by British photographer Jamie Morgan, the book features a combination of runway and unseen pieces from the collection.

With the idea of “feeling seen – being seen”, the collection is motivated by the sentiments of being acknowledged, the proposal is rooted in the experience of the wearer. This sentiment acts as a continuation of the runway show’s presentation wherein friends and family were present – and some as models. This intimate environment created a celebratory and affirming atmosphere, which was captured on film for a formal screening at Paris Fashion Week.

The collection acts as a study of individual manners of wearing clothes, conveyed across tailoring, sportswear and flou. With shirts and t-shirts structured with built-in knots imitating the impulse of tying a jumper around the shoulder or a shirt silhouette emulating the footballers’ gestures of pulling their shirts over their heads upon scoring a goal. Emphasizing the notion of individualistic and intuitive styling inherent to the collection, elements of convertible and reversible constructions, pieces de-and-reconstructed from other garment genres.

The pieces are composed of fabrics that have taken inspiration from the glamour of local character dressing, with colored moirés and nappa taking a nod at the rare groove and garage scenes of Britain. Additionally, stripy furs and shearling pay homage to Camden in the 1990s reinforced by papery and crunchy glazed linens. Inspired by the 1980s punk attitude, brushed pinstripes and pilled bobbly outerwear materials make an appearance with dusted rodeo leathers and fluid pleather. The collection also features the second collaboration between Martine Rose and Clarks in her current role as Guest Creative Director of the brand with a sling-back heel, a padded mule, and a padded Oxford shoe.

Martine Rose affirms their brand identity in challenging the every day and further exploring clothes as a tool of empowerment. With a nod to her community, the creative director blends the old with the new while seemingly affirming the importance of individual personality and character-building in the construction of your style.
