MARY KATRANTZOU SS 2015 LONDON

On the Supercontinent called Pangaea meaning “all lands” with a Panthalassa Ocean meaning “all the seas”, Mary Katrantzou’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection was born. The concept of unity between Pangaea and Panthalassa presents the ideal of movement, both literally and figuratively as the collection is effortless and flowing.
Mary Katrantzou has sought inspiration for her Spring Summer 2015 collection, not only in nature’s flora and fauna, but in the spaces of what “could have been”. The idea that we could elimination a sense of segregation and isolation by living on a supercontinent also begs the question – what would this world look like?

With an elegantly neutral colour palette of nude tones of sandstone, clay, foam, pastel coral, and sea greens which slowly grow more bold and vibrant, Katrantzou created a highly textured, and utopian collection. The silhouettes were wonderfully straightforward – from slip-dressed, shift dresses, sheaths to shell tops, their simplicity in form was taken to elegant heights with sumptuous embellishments of lace appliqués, to embroidery.

The tectonic plates and ocean’s deepest trenches provided the inspiration for the series of pants and evening dresses. With accessories featuring imagined prehistoric creates from both land and water, rather than a paradise lost, Katrantzou’s collection proposes that Pangaea is in fact a paradise found; and we couldn’t agree more.
