By Chloe Edstein

Literature take center stage as Miu Miu continues her dedication to contemporary thought and culture with Summer Reads. Miu Miu invites visitors to a series of special initiatives being held in selected cities across the world on June 7 th and 8 th , of this year. Visitors will receive complimentary copies of two out of three seminal works – Alba de Céspedes’ Forbidden Notebook, Sibilla Aleramo’s A Woman, and Jane Austen’s Persuasion – at customized newsstands or newly constructed locations, in anticipation of the summer season.

In the 1930s, Alba de Céspedes, a Cuban-Italian journalist, contributed to Piccolo, Epoca, and La Stampa. Her first novel, ‘L’Anima Degli Altri’, was published in 1935, the same year she was incarcerated for her anti-fascist endeavors in Italy. *Forbidden Notebook*, unveiled in 1952, is a newly appreciated treasure of women’s literature. It delves into the inner thoughts of the modern woman and her desire to liberate herself from the everyday oppressive nature of chauvinistic society.

Sibilla Aleramo gained fame for creating some of the earliest feminist literature in Italy. Her groundbreaking autobiographical book, A Woman, provides insight into the lives of Italian women at the beginning of the twentieth century.

In 1811, Jane Austen released her debut novel, Sense and Sensibility, marking the beginning of a prolific literary career. This was succeeded by the publication of Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and several other works. Austen culminated her writing journey with the release of Persuasion in 1817. This final novel chronicles the story of a woman who, after grappling with societal expectations and norms for years, finally uncovers her true emotions and attains self-awareness.

These books, selected for their authors courageous and influential status as female creators, span different times and places in history. Their work addresses concerns and ideologies that remain relevant today. These unique voices reflect on the extraordinary lives of women as daughters, lovers, wives, and mothers. By breaking conventional gender boundaries, they inspire every generation of women that follows.

Miu Miu Summer Reads will be in Pairs on June 7 th and 8 th , 2024 at Seine Kiosks, Stand 74 et 76, quai de l’Hôtel de Ville, 75004.
