MIU MIU SS24 COLLECTION

By Martina Conte

In the world of fashion, Miu Miu’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection, designed by Miuccia Prada, emerges as an ode to contemporary beauty. In an ever-changing world, beauty must reflect the complexity of our time, and this collection represents a quest for a reflective and responsive definition of beauty for modern times. With moments of beauty, touches of history, the collection explodes and reinvents itself, embracing the plurality of styles and the value of past history.

Miu Miu’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection embraces quotations from past styles to underscore the importance and meaning of fashion history. However, instead of adhering to rigid paradigms, this collection embraces a radical expansion, celebrating the rich plurality of fashion. It’s not just beauty but beauties, an openness to unique characters and the joy of life. The collection places significant emphasis on the individual, both through fashion and model selection. Citing history becomes a means to learn, to discover meaning, and to establish a deep interconnectedness with humanity. Traces of everyday life are imprinted on the clothes – washes, distressing, marked suedes and leathers – an exaggeration of the passage of time that conveys the notion of prior use and existing love.
The collection features prototypical ideas of clothing with deep significance. Swimwear, sportswear, evening wear. Men’s bathing slips, kid-mohair tailoring, antique underwear, New Balance 530, Church’s Shanghai, elegant dresses in embroideries and brocades. The concept of meaningful design is expressed through a connection with intention, objective, and benefit.

Garments designed for specific purposes, functions, and events are remixed here in unexpected combinations – a maillot de bain with a cocktail dress, a petticoat with a blazer. These juxtapositions convey a modern style that, in turn, reflects different lives, the multiplicity of contemporary identity, and the positivity of the endless possibilities of today. Collaborations between Miu Miu and contemporary artists are never intended as mere embellishments to fashion but as independent and free expressions of a congruent intellectual viewpoint. This season, Qatari-American artist Sophia Al-Maria places the Miu Miu show within a landscape of technological ruins, an imaginary history invented inside the Palais d’Iéna in collaboration with OMA. Al-Maria’s specially-created work, « Gravity & Grace, » depicts a confrontation between reality and fantasy, reflecting the intention of her body of work as a whole. Through this, she explores the meaning of storytelling, from the history of humanity to today, to transmit the past, share the present, and imagine the future.
