MOLLY GODDARD SS23
By Roisin Breen
On Saturday 17th September 2022, Molly Goddard showed her SS23 collection. She took her inspiration from red-carpet glamor in the pre-internet era, a time when dressing was for the party, the friends around you, and importantly for yourself. The images she went back to are people out to have fun, a casual laid back air to them, minus the step and repeat and constant posing.
The American-English designer, Charles James, was a key inspiration for Goddard. His elegant ball gowns and highly structured aesthetic lead her into the exploration of creating shapes on the body and to play with proportion. The resulting collection pushes its fabrics to their extremes, utilizing the qualities specific to each fabric and allowing them to do the work. Ever playful, Goddard takes juxtaposition with her fabric choices, intricatel evening dresses in cotton, ball-gowns in jersey.
It was a break from relentless scrolling, happy to be back on the IRL runway, she gave the audience an IRL show – slower, messier, more spacious.
