GUITARIST AND SONGWRITER SERGIO PIZZORNO FROM THE GROUP KASABIAN WAS CHOSEN BY G-STAR TO EMBODY THE NEW FALL-WINTER 2013 CAMPAIGN. THE MUSICIAN TALKS ABOUT HIS EXPERIENCE AS A MODEL WITH A LOT OF HUMILITY, HIS VISION OF FASHION AND HIS PASSION FOR MUSIC.

Why did you decide to represent G-Star?

I didn’t really have any plan, I didn’t know what I was walking into, but they showed me all the collaborations they had done with Dennis Hopper, Michael Madsen, with the Leica camera, the “Raw Defender” Land Rover, so it sort of made sense. Then we talked about doing a little music piece, it sounded good. After that I was asked if I wanted to be in it, so I thought “Yes why not? I haven’t done anything like it”. It didn’t feel weird in any way, it felt like a new experience.

What was it like to start modeling?

It was really easy, because I had already done a thousand photo shoots. So it was just a matter of doing that again. And Rankin works really fast.

Do you think there’s a big difference between the fashion and music worlds?

The fashion world has to be navigated carefully. There are so many great people working in fashion that there’s a lot of work to pay attention to. Music is still really sharp, but maybe a little less than fashion. Fashion people are really amazing, interesting and inspirational.

How would you describe your personnal style?

I’m just me: I think it’s the most important thing to be. Just be yourself and wear what looks good on you.

Do you see yourself as a « working-class hero »?

I don’t know, it depends. No, I wouldn’t class myself as a « working-class hero ». I don’t know, maybe I am. Hero is a big word, a big concept.

Where do you find inspiration when writing songs?

Everywhere. I’m sort of addicted to songwriting. I am always sort of switched on to something. I feel inspired by many things. So I think for me, it’s just always important to get switched on, to look around, so that at any point you can get inspired. I am fascinated by things in general and then when I get home and I sit in front of the guitar, hopefully what I have seen over the past few months comes out.

You seem very attached to your hometown of Leicester. What was your childhood like there?

I’m still there because my family lives there. I have two boys and I wanted their grandparents to be a part of their lives. Also I think if I wasn’t in a band I would have moved around. But I’m lucky because I get to see the world and then go home. It’s more a question of family than of never daring to leave. We spend our lives all around the world. I think it keeps you sharp.

What are your musical references?

I love the power of a good song, whatever the style is. It’s something that can reach people emotionally. I just it fascinating that a lyric can touch people, that it can give you goosebumps. And it could be a song made in the 50s or one made yesterday. Something so powerful that reaches you in your heart. I suppose I am into the future, whatever that sound is: searching for the future.

Is there a message you want to give people as the G-Star ambassador?

I don’t know if I have a message. I suppose: « just be true to yourself and everything will be okay! »
