GRUNGE OF THE FUTURE: LOUIS VUITTON SS16 COLLECTION

Paris Fashion Week – and overall « fashion month » as we say – is coming to an end. But it is ending with a big splash. First show of the day, Louis Vuitton invited their prestigious guests to the Louis Vuitton Foundation into a digital-inspired set with screens that displayed psychedelic video footages. On the runway, the collection felt like a modern take on new grunge, with sharp leather jackets bearing the LV monogramme and graphic stripes intertwined, as well as mesh tops that resembled futuristic coats of mail. The styling was all about individuality, as the models’ makeup variated from exaggerated black eyelashes to silver-painted ears. Tiaras made an appearance for a « medieval queen of the future » look as the girls were wearing their hair natural with thin braids here and there. It’s an understatement to say that Ghesquière took inspiration in masculine codes – the leather straps tied around their fists immediately reminded of a bandages worn by boxers, and the black creepers added another layer of edginess. Though, the Louis Vuitton woman is still feminine, she just likes to mix and match. She can easily wear a motorbike leather jacket paired with a puffy white skirt, or finds herself walking the streets of Paris in her perfectly cut trousers with visible zippers at the hem with a silky black blouse. Either way, she’s ahead of her time.
