SHIFTING BORDERS

While preparing this issue with our guest editor Patricia Marshall, we asked ourselves one question: “What are the main issues in art today?” What stood out to us as an essential starting point was the notion of engaged art, which is immersed in the real world and occupied with present social challenges. Next, the idea of breaking down boundaries and categories through art’s capacity for openness and fluidity appeared to us as a clear focal point: gender fluidity and fluidity between periods, styles and regions. On that basis, we asked who are the fundamental artists on these questions? Lawrence Weiner, Claude Lévêque, Paul McCarthy… While it is difficult for a single issue to summarize all the possibilities raised by these provocative questions posed by the art world today, this Special Art Issue features a breadth of mee- tings and conversations: Maurizio Cattelan and Luc Tuymans as curators, Claude Lévêque who produced a special project for our cover, Paul McCarthy who gave us an interview, Marc Blondeau as a key player of an informed art market, and a range of young artists gracing our pages: Veit Laurent Kurz, Minerva Cuevas, Christodoulos Panayiotou, Teresa Margolles… Across all generations, the field of possibility is growing ever wider, while the breaking points are no longer where we expected to find them… The boundaries have shifted definitively…
