PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE MEET AT THE CHANEL METIERS D’ART SHOW

This year, for his Métiers d’Art collection for Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld chose to connect Paris to the city of Hamburg, staging the show at the recently inaugurated Elbphilarmonie, an incredible piece of architecture lying besides the city’s industrial port. This venue was quite fitting for a collection blending references from the past with elements from the near future.

The show starts with variations of navy-blue silhouettes reminiscent of the Hamburg port’s sailors and merchants, complete with striped tops, pea coats, caps with anchors, wool leg warmers and wide trousers. Classic Chanel skirt suits are transformed with a deep cut striped sailor collar. Tweed, another recurrent fabric, is very present in the collection, along with cashmere and flannel. From navy and creme, the colors become brighter and more vivid as the collection evolves, with bright pink, orange and yellow hues. This Métiers d’Art show is, without a doubt, the one that embraces the most the legendary Chanel aesthetic, from the chains to the pearl sautoir necklaces. Most of all, the elegance so dear to Gabrielle Chanel, is honored and made impervious to the passing of time.
