PRADA AND AXIOM SPACE UNVEIL NEW SPACESUIT DESIGN FOR NASA’S ARTEMIS III MISSION

By Crash Redaction

At the International Astronautical Congress in Milan, Axiom Space and Prada officially revealed the design of the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit, set to be used for NASA’s Artemis III mission. This collaboration marks a groundbreaking fusion of fashion and aerospace engineering, demonstrating how creative design and technical expertise can elevate the next generation of space exploration gear.

The partnership between Prada and Axiom Space focused on the outer-layer materials of the spacesuit, combining high-performance textile knowledge with advanced engineering. Initially, a dark cover layer was displayed to conceal proprietary technology. However, the actual lunar spacesuit will feature a white outer layer, reflecting heat and protecting astronauts from extreme temperatures and lunar dust.

Lorenzo Bertelli, Chief Marketing Officer of the Prada Group, emphasized how the project aligns with Prada’s values: “Going beyond our limits perfectly reflects the spirit of the Prada brand. This first step in our collaboration with Axiom Space is only the beginning.” Prada’s involvement extended beyond design, as the brand shared expertise in material performance, sewing techniques, and advanced production processes to ensure the suit offers both comfort and durability under lunar conditions.

The AxEMU program exemplifies the power of public-private partnerships, with Axiom leveraging NASA’s $228 million Artemis task order to seek expertise from diverse industries.

By bridging functionality and aesthetics, Prada and Axiom Space have created a spacesuit that not only meets the rigorous demands of lunar exploration but also redefines the possibilities of commercial space innovation.
