PRIVATE POLICY SS23

By Roisin Breen

On Saturday, September 10th, Private Policy showcased its Spring/Summer 2023  Ready-To-Wear Collection during New York Fashion Week, and guests found themselves teleported to the brand’s imaginative world yet again. The inclusive brand continued to bring their New York rebellious style and fierce free spirit to the world with their collection entitled “Noah’s Ark”, an exploration of peace, freedom and love.

Private Policy’s creative directors, Haoran Li and Siying Qu have both been listed on Forbes China 30 under 30 and won the GQ China Present award. Recent finalists of CFDA / VOGUE Fashion Fund, they also won the Lane Crawford Global Creative Callout 2020.

This collection involved the exploration of utilitarian and ocean-inspired net material, ranging from mesh detailing and shimmering sequins that resembled the glimmer of water in the night, to overlapping nets lending the illusion of airy dimensions and handmade accessories made of precious natural-mottled dove feathers.

The team were particularly intrigued by images of Noah’s Ark, filled with animals of all species, and the stark contrast this has with contemporary “save-the-planet” narratives, which seem to only hold place for human survival. They call for a return to Noah’s vision of peace, love, and freedom for all, and a more harmonious relationship between humans and other species.

With each collection they focus on one social-political topic, such as bringing awareness to enslaved fishermen issues in the SS17 collection, discussing human relationship with money in FW19, and uncovering the dark side of American Big Pharma in FW20. With sustainability as the constant pursuit, they use fashion as an outlet to express diversity, build community and inspire meaningful conversations.

They shake up the regular sustainability narrative, and instead of focusing on the negative and the doomed, push to the forefront ideas, initiatives and solutions. Solutions such as, development of “animal highways”, stopping deforestation for human real estate development, and even daring to imagine a city with other animals cohabiting the space. The runway show story was an embodiment of this bold vision, models entered the NYC vessel in pairs symbolizing the animals boarding the ark, with animal music and sounds pulsing through the speakers.
