ROBERT WUN’S FALL-WINTER ’24 COLLECTION ‘TIME’

By Chloe Edstein

Robert Wun Fall-Winter “24 Couture collection marks the 10-year anniversary of the brand. Delving into the concept of time and exploring its significance and impact on the transient world, this collection encapsulates the essence of time through exquisite craftsmanship, where the art of couture becomes a testament to its passage.

The show opened with a striking black gown and matching veil adorned with crystals, symbolizing the first snowfall. Winter, a season that invokes reflection, served as the starting point. This snowy effect was also echoed in a white layer on a slender, trailing coat, appearing as if it had been torn apart and then mended using a kintsugi-like technique. This created a craquelure effect from which butterfly appliqués seemed to emerge, hinting at hope or beauty arising from decay.

A sinuous black mermaid dress with a tight-fitted bodice embroidered in pink cherry blossoms followed, symbolizing the arrival of spring. The theme of beauty’s decay was evident, with visible burns on the hems of a vibrant yellow three-piece ensemble in swishing silk, voluminous and entirely plissé. These burn marks, representing the erosion caused by time, were a recurring motif throughout the collection.

The collection’s narrative of time’s passage culminated in the final four looks, representing skin, flesh, bones, and soul—a progressive stripping away of both physical and spiritual layers. The flesh was depicted by a blood-red sheath covered in standing bugle beads, giving a spiked appearance. A skin-tight black jumpsuit was topped with a half-skeleton mannequin, which moved ominously with each step. This literal representation was contrasted by the soul, envisioned as a trailing veiled gown. Layers of tulle were embroidered with countless tiny multi-coloured crystals, shimmering in the dimly lit venue.

Through this collection, Robert Wun takes us on a journey through time, illustrating the cycle of life with stunning and thought-provoking designs.
