ROBOT SUITING AT DIOR PRE-FALL 2019

By Crash

Kim Jones presented Dior’s men’s pre-fall collection today (his second one for the house), in the heart of Tokyo, in the Telecom Center Building. After inviting American artist Kaws last season, he chose to put the spotlight on the legendary Japanese illustrator Hajime Sorayama who is known for his incredible hyper-realist paintings of robotic pin-ups. For the show, he created a gigantic statue inspired by one of his robot women which was placed at the center of the round-shaped catwalk. A strong feminine figure dominating the male models may be interpreted as a feminist message…or can just be left as what it is: a beautiful artwork.

Setting the tone for a retro-futuristic show, the Sorayama display worked really well with the smart silhouettes which mixed classic tailoring with technical fabrics, shiny materials, oil-slick effects, sequins and interesting fur. The incredible light show was reminiscent of an over-the-top club with colored beams flashing and scanning the room like laser. The first silhouettes were quite muted in shades of light grey with belted coats, suit pants and a graphic turtleneck. The blazers were buttoned to the side at the waist and cross-body bags were the accessory of choice. Outfits got more and more crazy as the techno beats got louder, ending in a total shiny frenzy.
